Under the high patronage of His Majesty Fon Mbuh II, traditional ruler of Wey village, located in the Mentchum Division, the Wey Youth Association (WEYAS) held its 2025 National Cultural Convention on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the Lycée Joss in Douala. The ceremony took place in the presence of Mrs. Nicoline Ebune, Head of the Regional Development Division in the services of the Governor, representing the Governor of the Littoral Region, alongside traditional authorities, elites, and members of the Wey community from various cities across Cameroon.
Held under the theme: “Wey Youth: Preserving Culture, Embracing Innovation, Fostering Peace,” the convention aimed to promote Wey cultural heritage, encourage innovation, and foster peace, particularly in the context of the ongoing socio-political crisis in the North-West and South-West regions of Cameroon. According to Barrister Dieudonné Ateh Lang, President of WEYAS: “WEYAS is the association of youths from Wey village. Today, we are celebrating our culture, embracing innovation, and above all promoting peace. We all know what is happening in the NOSO regions, and we are reflecting together on how peace can return.” He has also expressed gratitude to the media organizations that covered the event.
with various sporting competitions that brought together about eleven delegations from cities such as Bamenda, Bafoussam, Yaoundé, Kumba, Limbe, Mutengene, Tiko, Douala I, and Douala II, among others.
This cultural celebration also served as an opportunity for fundraising, aimed at constructing a youth center and gymnasium in Wey village. The center will provide vocational training in small trades and skills, particularly for young people who were forced out of school due to the armed conflict, thereby promoting socio-economic reintegration.
The 2025 edition was marked by several major innovations. Unlike previous years when the ceremony was held at night, this year’s event took place during the daytime to better showcase Wey culture. Another significant innovation was the official representation of the Governor of the Littoral Region, a first in the 29-year history of the convention. The event was also honored by the presence of His Majesty Fon Mbuh II, accompanied by his notables and sub-chiefs of Wey village.
On the sporting front, 11 teams competed in football, 8 teams in women’s handball, and 4 teams in men’s handball. The men’s handball final, played on Friday, was won by the Yaoundé delegation.
As for the traditional dance competition, all delegations took part. Another innovation was introduced: a 10-point penalty for late arrival, aimed at promoting punctuality and discipline. This rule, applied for the first time, explained some surprising results in the final rankings despite strong performances.
The event ended on a festive note with the cutting of the ceremonial cake, symbolizing unity and togetherness. The next edition is scheduled for December in Kumba, where the Wey community will once again gather to celebrate its culture.
